The Kindergarten program at Brooklyn Excelsior is expansive and rich in diversity. The lessons are tailored to meet the New York State Learning Standards. We use Open Court system for language arts (alphabets, phonics, reading, and writing), social studies, Saxon Math, and Foss/Delta Science. Lessons are interactive and hands-on to keep children engaged. Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School also incorporates moral focus into our curriculum. This provides children with not only academic training, but also character training. Moral focus is integrated throughout the curriculum.
What specials are offered?
Brooklyn Excelsior kindergarten specials include: music, writing, gym/P.E. art, and computers which they participate in for 45 minutes daily.
What a typical day in kindergarten may include
A day in Brooklyn Excelsior’s kindergarten class begins with a “Do Now,” where the children would complete a review of letters, numbers, and sight words learned during the week. After the Do Now the children sit on the reading rug for a story or an open discussion of their weekend (or something interesting to the children). The teacher then presents the language portion of the curriculum where the children work on sounds and letter recognition by playing a game with the alphabet. After the morning English Language Arts (ELA), the children participate in their scheduled specials: art, music, computers, or gym/P.E. Following their special lunch would be served, then it’s time for Math. Social studies or science end student’s full day of learning.
What are the goals for kindergarten?
By the end of the school year, kindergarteners should recognize at least 100 sight, or high-frequency words. As these words are introduced through our curriculum. The vocabulary will be introduced not only through language arts, but also through math, science, and social studies.
